At Bennet & Rey we celebrate 8th March, International Women’s Day.
Today we would like to send greetings to ALL WOMEN.
There are women who left their mark in our profession as the first female lawyers in Spain: Ascensión Chirivella (first women to join the Valencia Bar Association in 1922), Victoria Kent (First women to join the Madrid Bar Association in 1925) or Clara Campoamor, lawyer and politician, a key figure in making voting for all women possible in Spain. (The picture above shows the Spanish lawyer Clara Campoamor, making her speech asking for Spanish women’s right to vote, 1st October 1931)
Also so many women – not well-known – who have been our support and have allowed us to grow and become better people. For me that is my mother, my grandmother and great-aunt, my aunts, my cousins, my sister in law, my niece and my good friends, who have been there with me, some for many years, some much more recently.
And my colleagues whom I admire so much as great lawyers and also in many cases as mothers, who – I do not know how! – manage remarkably to cope with everything – and female judges, government officials, cleaners – in short all those women who make sure that the world keeps going.
I thank also all those men who have boldly and consistently supported women. I am thinking of my brother Peter, who was next to me at the Women’s Day demonstration last year, and of whom I am so proud of, my husband whom I admire and who is my constant support, of my father with his strength and his confidence in me, my nephews, my brother in law, and my male friends who listen to me and help me to grow. There are so many men whose support is important for us.
I say “Thank you!” to every single one of you. I HOPE THAT YOU HAVE A GREAT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!
